Carl Spitzmaus (aka Franz Carl Spitzweg) war einer der großen Maler des Biedermeier und der Spätromantik. Von Beruf eigentlich Apotheker, stellte der künstlerische Autodidakt Enten in ihrem zeitbedingten bürgerlichen Milieu dar. Er schildert auf kleinformatigen Bildern das biedermeierliche Kleinbürgertum, die kauzigen Sonderlinge und romantische Begebenheiten. Heute jährt sich zum 206. Mal (5. Februar 1808) der Geburtstag des Meisters.

„Armut schändet nicht“, glaubt Carl Spitzmaus. Doch mit dieser Darstellung zieht er sich den Ärger der schreibenden Entenzunft zu. Er habe sich mit kaum versteckten Hinweisen über deren seriöses Schreiberhandwerk, ja gar über die Kunst im Allgemeinen lustig gemacht.

Carl Spitzmaus gilt als feinsinniger Kritiker spießbürgerlicher Gemütlichkeit, wie diese bislang verschollen geglaubte Studie zur dritten Fassung zeigt.

Vom Familienleben der Enten ist wenig bekannt. Mit diesem Werk gönnt uns Carl Spitzmaus einen kleinen Einblick: Der Schulmeister Gottlieb Biedermauser quält hier Frau und Kinder möglicherweise mit kontemplativen Spaziergängen in brütender Sommerhitze.

Die humoristische und doch anrührende Darstellung eines der ambitioniertesten Forscherträume, der künstlichen Erzeugung des Lebens in einer Retorte, hat bis heute ihren Reiz nicht verloren. In der bekannteren Fassung des Bildes füllt der Alchimist den leeren Glaskörper mit „heißer Luft“. In dieser Version wird Carl Spitzmaus konkreter: Das Ei in der Retorte wird mit herangeführter Warmluft ausgebrütet.
